Robotics- New Era of Drug Discovery
Drug discovery is a process of discovering new drugs and medications in the field of biotechnology and pharmacology. The process of drug discovery is carried out in four stages: target identification; target validation; high speed screening; and lead optimization. A vast array of technologies is being used in the process of drug discovery. The increasing prevalence of health disorders and chronic diseases such as genetic disorder, nervous system disorder, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and many more are one of the major factors contributing to the growth of the drug discovery market. Cancer has major impact globally and are growing with a significant rate. According to the National Cancer Institute in 2016, a total of 1,685,210 new cancer cases and 595,690 deaths from cancer occur in the US. Additionally, the rate of new cancer diagnoses decreased by 3.1% per year in men and stayed about the same in women. Further, diabetes mellitus is chronic disease associated with severe life-long conditions including nerve damage, kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and eye diseases, that require intensive monitoring and control. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in 2015, 30.3 million people of all the ages in the US were living with diabetes.
The need for drug discovery has raised due to increased use of therapeutics in several diseases. Many new types of technologies such as RNA interference and nanotechnologies are used for the drug discovery process. Genetic disorder is another major health issue that is responsible for the significant growth in the drug discovery market. Apart from these, increasing healthcare expenditure and patent expiries of other drugs are accelerating the growth of the market. However, there is a huge cost of investment in the process of drug discovery. In addition, there are strict government regulations that have a negative impact on the growth of the market. Due to the stringent regulations imposed by the government, the process of drug discovery takes a very long time for the development of a drug. This hinders the overall growth of the global drug discovery market.
The introduction of robotics and automation in the process of drug discovery has greatly enhanced the capability of exploring and identifying new drug candidates. A number of chemical compounds can be manufactured in a matter of a couple of weeks. Robotics can be applied to run tests on thousands of these compounds on biological samples for potential therapeutic activity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could redefine the manner in which drugs are discovered. This leads to a whole new era of fast to market drugs. This would lead to the transition of standard 15-year drug development value chain to less than 5 years if the robotics compliances and the automation strategies are running in safe standards. Robotics have been applied in the biomedical research since 1980s, primarily for sample processing. The role of robotics in the process of drug discovery remains limited. However, recent robotics advances and laboratory automation such as developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence have opened a new frontier in the life science and pharmaceutical space.
